Kiosk Project: Big Leaf is a response to the problem of food insecurity which is the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because the lack of money and other resources. Big Leaf will provide fruits and vegetables for the SJSU community. Indvidulas can come get fresh produce as well as harvest new products in order to maintain the garden.
Design challenge and goals: The purpose of this project is to change the narrative of food insecurity and to help the community have access to free healthy food. There is a rise in food insecurity, especially in San Jose State University where 1 in 3 students are food insecure. However, most food insecure individuals don't use food pantries because of social stigma, at around 36 percent. Overall, there are around 75 percent of individuals who are food insecure but only 23 percent actually use the pantries. My solution, a garden, aims to make food insecurity not a social problem where people will feel comfortable to get free food. A social garden will allow individuals to help maintain the produce as well as get free food that they can use in various ways (to make other meals, to just eat).
Design concept: The kiosk is made up of large windows to imitate the design of a greenhouse. Greenhouse allows you to grow crops in all seasons. Greenhouses give you climate control throughout the year. Therefore, you can adjust to the conditions you would like to grow your crops, whether it is in the summer or winter. This garden will also contain year long vegetables and fruits, and will include supplementary produce form the SJSU community garden
